Steel demand in Mexico will increase by 4.4% in 2012

The Mexican Steel Association (Canacero) predicts that Mexican steel demand will increase by 4.4% to 21.69 million tons this year. In 2011, it was 20.76 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%, while in 2006 and 2007 it was less than 25 million tons, mainly due to the stagnant construction industry and durable consumer goods industries.

In 2011, Mexico’s steel production was 17.8 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 6.6%. Since the trough of 2009 (14 million tons), Mexican steel production began to increase year by year. The Mexican Steel Association predicts that Mexico’s steel self-sufficiency rate will remain above 80% in the coming years.
