The new national standard will solve the problem of standard fights. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health jointly issued the national food safety standard “Maximum Residue Limits of Pesticides in Foodsâ€, which will be officially implemented on March 1 next year. The six national standards and 10 agricultural industry standards that previously involved the maximum residue of pesticides in food will be abolished at the same time.
It is understood that the new standard has established 2,293 residue limits for 322 pesticides in 10 categories of agricultural products and foods, an increase of more than 1,400. The relevant person in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture said that the new national standards basically cover the main agricultural products consumed by Chinese residents, and their scientific, operability and systemicity have been significantly improved.
Before the promulgation and implementation of the Food Safety Law, there are more than a dozen different standards for pesticide residue limits in China, including 3 national standards and more than 10 industry standards. These standards overlap, repeat, and even have some contradictions.
After the promulgation and implementation of the Food Safety Law in 2009, it is required to integrate the current food and agricultural product quality standards and the standards enforced in the relevant food industry standards, and uniformly publish them as food safety standards.
The new standard will become the only mandatory national standard for monitoring pesticide residues in food in China. In the new standard, the maximum residue limit of pesticides for vegetables, fruits, tea and other fresh agricultural products is the highest, including 915 pesticide residues in vegetables, 664 fruits, 25 teas, and 17 edible fungi.
