Tokyo University Graduate School of Engineering Graduate School of Engineering, Specialist Assistant Professor Yokoo Yoshikazu's research team developed a flexible clinical thermometer that can be manufactured using the printing process. This ultra-thin, soft plastic thermometer made with a printing process was attached to the body surface and successfully measured the temperature distribution of the body surface. The product is envisaged for use in monitoring the body temperature and other health care, medical care, and maintenance areas.


Fabricated on a 1μm thick film substrate

The flexible thermometer developed this time was made on a film substrate using a printing process. With a thickness of only about 15μm, it is soft and flexible. Sensitivity up to 0.02 °C, response speed up to 100ms. Experiments have confirmed that reproducibility will not be lost even if repeated measurements are made nearly 2000 times.

The power circuit and reading circuit have not been integrated in the sensor, but if the technology previously developed by the R&D team is used, the power circuit and the read circuit can be integrated in principle. In the future, the research team will further reduce the thickness, increase the number of repeatable measurements, and strive to achieve commercialization within three years.

Ultra-thin and lightweight, not easily damaged

As a material for realizing a flexible temperature sensor, a "Positive Temperature Coefficient (Polymer PTC)" attracts attention as the temperature increases and the resistance increases. However, using a polymer PTC, a temperature sensor having a response temperature near body temperature that can be manufactured using a printing process has not yet been realized.

This time in the synthesis of polymer PTC, the method of changing the mixing ratio of the two monomers makes the response temperature adjustable near the body temperature. Specifically, by changing the mixing ratio of octadecyl acrylate and butyl acrylate, the response temperature can be freely adjusted at 25 to 50°C. The original way of adjusting the response temperature of the polymer PTC was to change the molecular weight, so the controllability of the response temperature was low.

Graphite is added as a conductive material. Near the body temperature, when the temperature rises, the polymer PTC expands, the physical distance between the graphite particles increases, and the resistance increases. For a temperature change of 5[deg.] C., the resistance will change by 5 to 6 orders of magnitude. Due to the large variation, no complicated read circuit is required.

The team attached the developed temperature sensor to the lung surface of rats and measured the temperature changes accompanying respiratory motion. As a result, it was found that although the outside temperature (25°C) and body temperature (37°C) are greatly different, the mouse's lungs have a temperature difference of only about 0.1°C between exhalation and inhalation. Experiments have shown that thermostatic animals can maintain a constant body temperature with precision.

The team also produced a 12-point by 12-point multi-point thermometer that integrates active matrix of organic transistors using a printing process. The surface temperature distribution was measured in real time.

Monitor infants and postoperative areas

The intended use of the flexible clinical thermometer is to monitor the baby's body temperature so as to detect abnormalities early, stick to the affected area after the operation to monitor the inflammation caused by inflammation, and also to measure the temperature inside the clothes during exercise so as to develop functional sportswear.
