Diamonds may become as thin as 2D materials! A new study shows that superhard carbon can be forged into a film state called "Diamondene." Graphite, which is also composed of carbon atoms, can be made into a two-dimensional film having a thickness of only one carbon atom. This structure is called graphene. Scientists have been continually trying to make similar two-dimensional films with diamonds.

Luiz Gustavo Can04ado, a physicist at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Brazil, and his colleagues published a study in the journal Nature Communications: placing two sheets of graphene sheets Compressed in tens of thousands of times of the Earth's standard atmospheric pressure, its crystal structure changes from graphite to diamond.

Pavel Sorokin, a theoretical physicist at the National University of Science and Technology MISiS in Moscow, said, “This is the thinnest diamond in the world. Diamonds have always been known for their hard and difficult to change. But now we can finally use the amazing properties of diamonds in the nano-field." Diamonds may also be magnetic, which may come in handy in the field of spintronics, such as the use of electronic rotation to store data.

Scientists use the "Raman spectroscopy" technique to observe the structure of carbon crystals. Simply put, the laser is irradiated onto the material to observe changes in atomic vibration under the action of high pressure. This method provides some indirect evidence to prove the formation of diamond olefins. The next step in the study is to confirm the structure of the crystal by X-ray or electron diffraction.
